International Conference Criticisms and Developments in the Assessment of Radiation Risk
5th and 6th May 2009
Molyvos (Mithymna) Island of Lesvos, Greece
In association with the Department of Environment, University of the Aegean Molyvos (Mithymna) Island of Lesvos, Greece
The purpose of the Conference was to critically examine the current radiation risk models epitomised by recent reports of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the US BEIR VII Committee.
The Conference was held as scheduled. Contributions and recorded discussions have been peer-reviewed and are published.
The Edward Radford Memorial Award was given to Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky for his outstanding contribution to research into the heath effects of radioactivity in the human organism. Dr. Radford’s widow Jennifer Radford presented the Award. A fuller account is in preparation.
A Declaration, drafted during the Conference and amended in the final Plenary Session, was signed by all the participating scientists unanimously. The Declaration is reproduced on a separate page.
Observers at the Conference (those who were not contributing to the scientific work of the Committee) were not invited to endorse the Declaration. The Committee recognises, however, that its work is of large and legitimate interest to people working in politics, health, law, insurance, employee organisations, nuclear and environmental regulation, environmental campaigns and other fields, and has received applications from such persons to be allowed to support the Declaration. The Committee is considering how to facilitate and coordinate such support. An announcement will be made in due course. In the meantime, those wishing to support the Declaration may email the Office Manager via this email link or write to
